Headlights Are For Being Seen Too

All the rain we've had this spring has really helped me notice how many drivers do not turn on their car's headlights in bad weather. During some of the heavy rain and spray kicked up by tractor trailer rigs, it's almost impossible to see vehicles if their headlights are off. It just shows how absent minded many drivers are. They think headlights are only for seeing but they are also for being seen. And before you say, "well you saw the cars didn't you?" Yeah. I saw them but it was tough. During an emergency maneuver, other car and truck drivers may not see them.

I always turn on my car's headlights in all weather because several respected studies have shown that accidents are reduced if headlights are used all the time. It's a good habit I carried over from my motorcycle riding days.

Volvo has the right idea in having its car's headlights and taillights turn on automatically when the car is started. I realize that most new cars have daytime "running lights" that come on automatically, but the taillights do not turn on. You need those taillights too.

My brother works for an international company that requires all employees to turn on the headlights when using company vehicles. After the policy was enforced, the number of accidents was reduced.

So remember, be seen and be safe. What do you think?

I have a 2004 Chevy Malibu, and it has daytime running lights, but they are the turn signal lights(orange), not the white light, but it I turn on my fog lights the parking light turn on also. My car also has automatic lights when I turn the car on during the night or the early morning hours the headlights come on.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT MY POST IS
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU. SINCE IT'S A STATE LAW--HOW MANY POLICE DO U THINK WILL PULL SOMEONE OVER IN THE RAIN BECAUSE THEY DON;T HAVE THEIR LIGHTS ON?? I THINK THE ANSWER IS A BIG FAT ZERO!!!..I TRAVEL TO LANCASTER FROM HARRISBURG EVERYDAY ON 283--I SEE PLENTY OF CARS WITHOUT THEIR LIGHTS ON AND NEVER HAS A COP PULLED SOMEONE OVER--BUT THEN AGAIN THERE HARDLY ANY COPS ON 283!!

HUH? Most of this is cuz there are too many stupid drivers. I have a new 09 dodge ram, they did away with daytime running lights(thank god) but my head lights and tail lights come on automatically when the windshield wipers come one, not to mention when its dark from rain the lights are on automatically anyway, I never understood why daytime lights were so good when like you said, the tailights are off.

isnt it a law in the commonwealth if your windshield wipers are on your headlights must be on? is so why dont the police officers in the commonweath pull these people over and give them a ticket..or is it to wet out????

Joel
The "headlight law" is Pennsylvania was instituted with good intent.... to reduce death and/or injury. A lot of drivers do not comply for the same reason that they won't wear a seat belt, or feel a need to run their mouth off on a cell phone while driving..... STUPIDITY.

I believe people dont use their brains to put their headlights on. When its thunderstorms or any storm and its getting dark wouldnt you think to turn on your headlights.

It is state law that headlights are to be turned on if windshield wipers are in use but it is rarely enforced. It's also a secondary offense. You have to be pulled over for another reason like speeding.

I believe a federal mandate needs to be put in place that the daytime running lights turn on when the car is shifted into any drive gear or reverse. Also, when the daytime running lights are needed, the parking lights should be turned on too. On my drive to and from work 100+ mile. I see this way too much. On the interstate, if you can't see the person's tail lights how do you know the distance between you and the other car. I live near a high school (which I drive by to and from work) and I see this all the time. It is not just the students driver, it is mainly the people coming home from work.
