The troposphere and stratosphere are the two lowest portions of our atmosphere.

They consist mainly of nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%). If you do some quick math, you know there is only 1% left. The remaining 1% consists mainly of trace gases including argon, helium, and several others. Other gases in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, methane, and ozone are found in very small quantities, but are nonetheless important for sustaining life here on earth.
