High-Altitude Lightning

High-altitude lightning appears as brightly colored flashes high above thunderstorm clouds.  These flashes shoot up above the thunderstorm cloud at the same time other lightning strikes are being discharged inside the storm.  High-altitude lightning is also known as red sprites, blue jets, and green elves due to its colorful appearance.
