Questions & Answers: Summer & Racing

May 28, 2008

Welcome to another edition of Questions & Answers.  The first question today was sent to me last week, but I think in some ways it still applies.  Check it out!

Laura, A Weather Buff in Mechanicsburg writes:

"Oh Brett -- I just read your blog from May 14th.  In it you were explaining that there doesn't seem to be any sign of warm weather in the near future and that this summer could prove to be very cool.  I was just writing to find out if that is still true or if anything has changed.  There is a warm-up predicted for the weekend.  Is that warmth only going to be short lived???  I was really hoping it would be the beginning of some decent summer weather.  Please tell me the warmth will stick around."

Thanks for the question Laura.  It certainly did turn out to be a warm Memorial Day weekend and we could not be happier!  After several weekends of cloudy, cool, and damp weather conditions, Mother Nature certainly picked a great time to turn around and bless us with beautiful sunshine and warmer temperatures.  That being said, I still think we may see a cooler than normal summer.  Let's look at today for example.  Normally on May 28th, we should be near 76 degrees for a high.  Many places are still stuck in the lower 60s this afternoon and probably will only warm up to near 70 degrees until all is said and done.  This doesn't seem that significant, but it is still below normal.  We may tap into the 80s once again by Friday and the weekend, but I doubt that they will be long lived.  My gut tells me that days with temperatures in the 90s may be few and far between this summer.  I have talked at length about the North Atlantic Oscillation before and how that is a possible player in our temperature pattern.  While it has shifted positive for the end of May, forecasts indicate that another negative phase could be on the horizon for early June.  In other words, our temperatures could once again be on the cool side during the first part of June if these NAO forecasts stick.  This could be a good thing, however, for those of you that don't like the heat and humidity.  It's possible our temperatures could stay in the lower 70s without the heat and humidity.  That would be fine with me!  The best I can say Laura is that we will have to wait and see...but don't be surprised if you have to run the air conditioner less this summer than most.

The second question today concerns weather elsewhere in the country.  I hope all of you race fans are reading the blog!

"Hey Brett...I was wondering what the weather will be like at Dover this weekend.  We are headed down tomorrow for race weekend.  So if you can give me some good news lol... keep up the great work and hope to hear from you soon!"

Thanks for the kind words bigbuck!  Now let's see what's in store in the world of weather for the big race this weekend.

Take a look at the surface maps for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons.  These really paint the picture nicely for how the weekend forecast is shaping up for all of you race fans heading to Dover this weekend.

The weather in Dover looks absolutely perfect for Friday.  The high pressure I have circled off the coast will help keep the skies blue and the temperatures reasonable.  Highs Friday afternoon should be in the upper 70s.  Saturday looks to be the so-so day right now.

I have an arrow pointing to an area of low pressure that will swing by to our north.  A cold front will accompany that low pressure and that could help fuel a few showers and thunderstorms Saturday afternoon at the track.  Hard to say at this point if any will be severe, but keep your guard up and take an umbrella for sure.  The good news in all of this is that temperatures will shoot up nicely ahead of the cold front Saturday afternoon.  Highs in Dover look to be in the mid 80s!  That's nice!

If you are sticking around through the day Sunday, it looks like an improvement over Saturday's weather.  Behind the cold front, conditions will turn nicer and cooler.  Plus, the humidity will not be as steep on Sunday.  Skies should be partly sunny with highs in the mid to upper 70s.  You will probably notice a breeze on Sunday, but it will be a pleasant enough afternoon.

Enjoy the weekend at Dover bigbuck!  While Saturday looks questionable, the weekend as a whole should be pretty nice and there are no washout conditions in the forecast.  Other than a thundershower Saturday afternoon, most of the weekend should stay dry for the race fans.

That's all for today folks!  I'll be back tomorrow with some more entries.  If you want your question to appear in Questions & Answers, send it to me by posting below or dropping me an email at brettsblog@abc27.com!  Have a great Wednesday!
