Good morning! Welcome back to Brett's Weather Blog. I was away for a few days and now I am back and ready to talk some weather. I was able to spend the last three days along the shore of Lake Wallenpaupack up in beautiful Wayne County. There are some really wonderful sights to see and the drive up was gorgeous. If you ever get the chance, I recommend spending some time up in that part of our state. Plus, the weather was perfect! Unfortunately, our streak of perfect weather is coming to an end starting today. I'll talk more about that in my afternoon post. For now, onto today's Thack Fact.
Did you know that tree crickets can actually tell you the outdoor temperature? No, they can't talk, but if you use a little math, you can figure it out without looking at a thermometer. All you need to do is count the number of chirps that a cricket makes in fifteen seconds and then add 37. The sum will be close to the actual outdoor temperature because temperature directly affects a cricket's rate of activity. Is this an old wive's tale? Maybe...but try it out next time you hear the crickets chirping and see if it works!
