A derecho is a type of severe thunderstorm that produces very strong downburst winds.  There storms are often long lasting and can be extremely damaging.  Derechos can span many hundreds of miles and typically produce dire consequences.  These storms can be accompanied by tornadoes.  These types of storms were first recognized in the Corn Belt region of the United States, but are observed across many regions in the mid-latitudes.
