Adams County Commissioners approved a proclamation that will commemorate the historic life of Mary Jamison. Jamison was a 15-year-old girl living in western Adams County during the French and Indian War.
On April 5th, 1758, Mary and her family were captured by a Shawnee raiding party. Her parents and siblings were killed by the warriors. Mary was sold to a Seneca tribe.
After the French and Indian War, Mary stayed with her Seneca family and became a leading member of the tribe as well as a substantial landowner in New York state until she died at the age of 90.

To remember the 250th anniversary of her capture, organizers are planning events that will show her Irish, Colonial, and Native American Heritage. A reenactor will show the life of Mary Jamison for school programs throughout the year.
