Lawyer for Priest in Perjury Case Wants a New Judge
posted 3:43 pm Wed January 23, 2008 - HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP)
The attorney for a Roman Catholic priest charged with perjury wants a different judge assigned to the case. The Rev. Joseph Sica of Scranton is accused of lying to a Dauphin County grand jury about his relationship with an organized crime boss who died in the 1990s.

Sica testified in August as part of an investigation into his longtime friend, Pocono Mountains casino owner Louis DeNaples.

abc27 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion? In newly filed court documents, Sica's attorney Sal Cognetti is asking for a special trial judge to be appointed by the Supreme Court.

Cognetti says Judge Todd Hoover violated rules by taking the case and that Hoover appears prejudiced against Sica.

Dauphin County prosecutor Fran Chardo says he'll go before whichever judge is appointed to the case, but disputes the contention that Hoover violated procedure.
