York, Pa - Downed power lines were only some of the problems facing York County emergency officials Thursday due to high winds.
Roofs blew off several buildings and debris was all over the road.
At least three local schools closed early because of wind-related issues.
Students at the South Eastern Middle School East in the South Eastern School District in Fawn Grove were dismissed at 10:45 a.m. The dismissal was due to "weather-related roof issues," according to the district.
Lincoln Charter School in York dismissed students at 10:30 a.m. A school spokesperson said the dismissal was due to a power outage.
Red Land High School closed at 10:00 a.m., also because of a power outage.
Downed power lines in York Township caused a brush fire.
Tom Rotondo lives nearby and spotted it from his house.
"It looked like a wall of flame," said Rotondo. "It was really scary. I tried to call the fire department to let them know what was going on because I was afraid the fire was going to get out of hand."
A spokesman for Met-Ed said at the height of the outages 11,000 customers in York County were without electricity. Most of the outages were in Dillsburg and Hanover. As of 3:30pm Thursday 2,600 customers were without power, most in the Hanover area.
