When school lets out in Lebanon, most students head for home, on foot.
According to Lebanon Mayor Bob Anspach, "Almost all children walk to school in Lebanon. The city is about 2 ½ miles across."
On Lincoln Avenue, near Hauck Elementary School, sidewalks simply stop. Sometimes, this forces children into traffic. That is going to change though, thanks to efforts started by the community.
"There were some parents, grandparents and neighbors in the area of Henry Hauck school who noted that in the Lincoln Avenue area that there were no sidewalks for the children," explains Anspach.
Lebanon County's Metropolitan Planning Organization, or MPO, gets money from the state and federal government that is earmarked for transportation improvement programs. Lebanon leaders asked the MPO for more sidewalks. The MPO said yes.
Transportation Planner John Fitzkee notes, "The various locations that were chosen, there are elementary schools only a couple of blocks over from where they are. On a scale, this is obviously an important program so that people have adequate walking."
The total cost of the project will be more than $210,000. The city will pay about $42,000 of it with the rest coming from the earmarked state and federal funds. Sidewalk construction will start sometime this year, perhaps by summer.
