A major redevelopment project in York is getting a financial boost from the state. Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Kathleen McGinty presented the city with a check for $1 million today.
The money will be used to clean up and bring new soil to the site of the Northwest Triangle Project, a $53 million initiative that will transform 19 acres of the downtown into commercial office space, retail stores, and townhouses.
Demolition began in January, but construction cannot start until the ground is free of asbestos, metals and chemicals left behind by years of industrial use.
"For every acre of former industrial property that we clean up," McGinty said, "we save about four acres of farm land because we're bringing development back into our cities, towns and boroughs."
McGinty said the clean up should be complete by the fall of 2009.
