An agreement has been reached between the Cumberland Valley Board of School Directors and the Cumberland Valley Education Association. The two groups met Wednesday evening and made a joint announcement that an agreement had been reached and there will be school Thursday.
Details of the tentative agreement will not be announced until they can be presented to the teachers. The rank and file will then vote on that agreement as soon as possible. The school board will then vote on that agreement at its next scheduled meeting.
The teachers union had announced Monday night that they would go on strike Thursday morning because of a disagreement over money available to fund teachers' yearly pay increases. The board contended that it was being misunderstood and urged the union to attend an informal bargaining session Wednesday night.
On Wednesday afternoon union spokesperson Jay Foerster said the teachers were backing off their demands for a 4.9% pay increase. He said the union would call off the strike if the board would agree to three points of contention, which all centered on the yearly increases in teachers' pay.
The agreement was announced shortly before 11 o'clock Wednesday night and board president John Jordan said all students would be expected to be in school Thursday morning.
