After a decade of designing and two years of building, the new visitors center for Gettysburg National Battlefield is several weeks away from opening. In these several weeks, the National Park Service and Gettysburg Foundation is putting the finishing touches on the dozen exhibit galleries. Along with artifacts from the battlefield, interactive exhibits will tell the story of the three day battle, along with the the causes and consequences of the Civil War from before and after the battle. Numerous video displays give an introduction of the battlefield and show the sequence of events that occurred on the first three days in July, 1863. The new visitors center also has a refreshment saloon, a feature film, and ticket counters for battlefield guide services and other attractions. It will be the new home of the cyclorama painting that currently is under restoration but will reopen to public viewing in late September. The new visitors center will open at 8:00 am Monday, April 14th to the public.
