U.S. Marshals have arrested a man suspected in the armed robberies of more than 20 banks and businesses in Pennsylvania and Maryland since October.
Matthew J. Fletcher, 40, of Harrisburg, was taken into custody Friday night by members of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force at a gas station in Carlisle.
U.S. Marshals identified Fletcher as the driver of a 2008 Toyota sedan bearing out-of-state tags. The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Lower Paxton Township, according to U.S. Marshal Michael R. Regan. The license plates had been reported stolen out of West Virginia.
Fletcher is suspected in the robberies of ten banks and five businesses in the Harrisburg area, including bank robberies in Camp Hill, Hampden Township, and New Cumberland, as well as two bank heists in Hummelstown.
He's also suspected of robbing a tanning salon in Hershey, a beauty supply shop in Susquehanna Township, a Christian book store in Lower Paxton Township, and a Subway restaurant in West Hanover Township.
Police had dubbed the suspect in those robberies the "Long Gun Robber" because he was often armed with a long-barreled silver revolver.
Regan said when Fletcher was taken into custody, he was in possession of a .357 magnum revolver that had been reported stolen out of Lower Paxton Township. Regan said the barrel of the handgun had been sawed off.
Fletcher was convicted on bank robbery charges in Dauphin County in 1993 and was sentenced to 8 to 20 years in prison.
