I know many people will be attacking their taxes this weekend. If that includes you, we have some last minute tips.
Some people are lucky. Even though tax day is creeping up on us, their income tax returns are already prepared and ready to file. Like Fred Dayhoff of Harrisburg. "I'm ready to go," said Dayhoff. "I did them yesterday. I owe big time."
A Wormleysburg tax expert who's a member of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants says if your return is complex and still not done, filing for an extension is better. John Steffee of Pfister and Rompalo said, "The problem is when you do it quickly many times you will miss a great deal of deductions." Steffee said people forget about home office deductions, charitable deductions and people even forget about deducting real estate taxes," if they prepare their returns in a rush.
Steffee said you can file for an extension electronically. And he said, filing your tax return electronically is also easier than paper.
Pearl Bryant of Harrisburg said she filed electronically. "That works very well. It was very easy."
Senior Citizens who have not filed tax returns for years do have to file this year to receive the economic stimulus rebate. Grace Ponicsan, a retiree from Harrisburg said she already filed. "I did because I wanted that three-hundred dollars back. That rebate will come in handy."
