The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced plans Wednesday to triple its aerial spraying of woodlands to combat gypsy moth damage, saying this spring could be marked by increased infestations and heavy defoliations in some areas.
Gypsy moth numbers have increased to the point where spraying will be necessary on more than 221,000 acres in 27 counties, according to DCNR.
About 65,000 acres in 19 counties were sprayed in 2007.
Nine helicopters and five airplanes will begin the spray program in early May. Spraying will end shortly after Memorial Day.
The following is a list of local counties enrolled in the 2008 gypsy moth spray program and the number of private acres to be sprayed:
| Adams | 370 |
| Berks | 862 |
| Cumberland | 13,371 |

| Franklin | 5,115 |
| Lebanon | 7,991 |
