Capital Area Transit just expanded its service to include Northern Dauphin County. Because of support from the state, it's a pretty cheap ride.
A cold, soggy Monday morning. Some people pulling into the park and ride lot near the Clark's Ferry bridge will have no problem spotting their ride in the fog and rain. It's a huge, blue CAT bus with a flashing "harrisburg" destination sign up front. "I like it," said rider Sally Fiscus of Duncannon. "I think you'll find more people taking the bus now that gas is going up. So it will be a great convenience for many."
CAT just added a bus for the Halifax, Duncannon and Dauphin Borough areas. CAT also took over another route from Elizabethville, after a small bus company closed up shop. Bus rider Penny Weaver of Halifax said, "It's cheaper than driving. Especially the way gas is going. So we'll see how the new one works out."
Because you helped to pay for this with your state tax dollars, CAT is able to keep the daily price at about three bucks or so if Northern Dauphin County riders pay on a monthly pass.
"It started very well," said Cat Executive Director James Hoffer. "We had thirty-four people on the Elizabethville, Millersburg bus and nine people on the Halifax bus." CAT managers rode along on the first day of the new runs. they expect the ridership to increase as the word gets out and as gas prices continue to climb. "People's commuting costs if they choose to drive alone, I think they're having second thoughts." said Hoffer. "There are other ways to be transported."
The bus riders we spoke with say gas prices won't seem so bad now. "It's not my worry now," said Penny Weaver of Halifax.
