Harrisburg, Pa. - Revenue from Pennsylvania's casinos has increased nearly ten percent in the last year, despite the slow economy.
According to figures released today by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, slot machines generated more than $155 million in revenue last month, a 9.4 percent increase over March 2008.
Pennsylvania received about $85 million of that, based on the state's 55 percent tax rate on terminal revenue from slot machines.
The Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course in Grantville, which had its first full month of operation in March 2008, generated about $21 million last month. The casino took in about $16 million in March 2008.
Two new casinos are expected to open this year. The Sands Resort Casino in Bethlehem is expected to open next month, while the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh plans to open in August.
An additional five casinos are permitted to open under Pennsylvania's Gaming Act, including two that have already been licensed in the city of Philadelphia.
