The state Senate has tabled a measure that would amend the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage and civil unions.

The bill's sponsor, Sen. Michael Brubaker, R-Lancaster, told colleagues on the Senate floor Tuesday that the bill faces long odds in the House.

Proponents of the amendment say writing the ban into the constitution will prevent a judge from overturning the law or opening the door to civil unions between gays and lesbians.

Pennsylvania law already defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Opponents say the measure would enshrine discrimination into the constitution, and could harm efforts by unmarried couples to adopt children and share employer-offered health care benefits.

Not too long ago, marriage between a man and a woman of two different races was not legal. Without legal protection a couple could not share each other's medical insurance, file taxes jointly, and protect their children. Their children also suffered social injustice fueled by laws that were based on some peoples' religious beliefs that God didn't like interracial marriages.

I am glad this country has grown beyond that kind of racial, religious bigotry. Now the religious bigots have focused their ire on gays and lesbians who want the same legal rights that marriage imparts.

This Grandmother Lesbian prays for the day that all people of all spirituality can focus their energy, time and money on improving the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves.

The energy, time and money spent on this degrading state constitutional amendment, whether it is passed (God forbid!) or not, could provide child care and education for many needy children in Pennsylvania. As a taxpayer, I am angered by the wasting of our legislators' precious and limited time.
