Officials with the Northern York County School District are warning parents about a possible census scam.
Kathy Johnson, the district's business manager, said a Franklin Township resident received a phone call from a woman who said she was with the school district and was conducting a census. The caller was able to identify the names of all the residents in the household.
The resident told the caller she had already completed her census card and asked the caller to send another one by mail. The caller said they only take the information over the phone. When the resident asked for the caller's name and phone number, the caller quickly hung up.
"Our concern is perhaps people are fishing for information," said Johnson.
Johnson said the district never conducts a census over the phone. They mail out forms once a year in January and never ask for social security numbers.
She said if someone who identifies himself or herself as being from the school district calls asking for information, the resident should ask for the caller's name and phone number. If the caller will not provide the information, Johnson said the resident should just hang up.
Johnson said parents should also talk to their kids about not giving out information to strangers over the phone.
