There was a public hearing in Wrightsville, York County Thursday night to get the public's input on a plan to disband the town's police force. The borough just started its own police force last year.
Some residents had said in the past that the new officers were too aggressive and were harrassing. There were complaints that police officers were following residents as soon as they left local bars.
But most of the people that showed up for the hearing here stood up for the police force. They wanted to maintain the town's -own- police force and not revert to getting outside coverage. Residents said they see much more of a police presence in the borough now as compared to when they got outside coverage from Hellam Township.
A large number of residents at Thursday's hearing blasted the borough council for the way they've handled this issue and others in Wrightsville. Borough council vice president Larry Kirkessner was among four council members that voted Monday night to ask Columbia Borough and Hellam Township about police coverage for Wrightsville. Kirkessner says he wants to look at other coverage to save money. Last month Kirkessner was cited by Wrightsville police for public drunkeness and disorderly conduct. Many residents say the effort to get rid of the police force is a personal vendetta.
