Saturday evening, fire gutted half of her home. It started in Marilyn's bedroom, where her niece grabbed a candle from the dresser. "I guess her hand got hot and she threw it on top of the bed. That's when the fire started," said Lopez. Marilyn doesn't have much left to wear, only the few clothes that didn't burn. "We lost everything on the second floor," she said. Some family pictures survived, others were destroyed. Neighbors and friends are helping with the clean-up effort. "Material is material and that we can get back little by little. The most important thing is my kids are safe and my family is safe," said Lopez. The Red Cross is helping Marilyn, her kids, and relatives who lived there. The family of ten will stay in a hotel temporarily, but long term, "I don't know. I don't know yet. I really don't know what we're going to do," said Lopez. Lopez was renting the duplex, but says her landlord recently lost the property to the bank. So Marilyn needs of some help right now to find permanent housing and clothes for her children and extended family.
