Parents in the Central Dauphin East School District want equality in the school district. They say there is a big difference in economic status when comparing East to the wealthier Central Dauphin High School. East parents met Tuesday night to share ideas and develop a plan they can eventually take to the school board.
The meeting was organized by parent Jeanne Webster, who says it's been in the works for months. For years now parents of Central Dauphin East students have complained of inequities between the two schools. Some of the parents talked Tuesday night about re-districting, but others said there could be other solutions including finding ways to raise money to help C-D East students.
Webster says it's harder for C-D East students to pay for extra-curricular activities. She says that East's location at the southern end of the district puts it closer to other school districts, like Harrisburg, McDevitt and Steel-High. That means more schools competing for a limited number of corporate donations.
Another parent said that the inequality shows itself in attitudes among residents and students. She said that Central Dauphin people look down their noses at East people. A realtor pointed out that a comparable home will sell for much more in C-D than in East territory.
Webster says the group will meet again, although no meeting time has yet been set.
