A trip down memory lane is not always a pleasant one for George and Kathy Tambasis. In November 1992, George was delivering pizza. when he was ambushed, beaten, and shot several times.
George's doctor told him he probably shouldn't be alive - not with the damage that was done by the bullets. One shot tore through George's heart. It's reconstructed, but an ultrasound photo shows a bullet is still lodged in there.
George is clearly not the same as before. "I do hold down a full-time job," he said, "and between that and trying to work on the house, I just get tired."
That's left projects like a kitchen renovation undone. There's no stove - or any appliances for that matter.
"For eleven months, we've been eating out of a microwave and a hotplate," Kathy Tambasis said. "The kids keep saying, when are you gonna get the kitchen done?"
On the heels of the incomplete kitchen project came another problem. "When George was doing the kitchen, he stuck a drill through one of the wires and we think that shorted the bathroom lights," Kathy said. "We don't know how to fix it."
That's why George and Kathy are hoping there's a neighbor out there to help them. "If somebody would help us, that would be wonderful," Kathy said. "I'd have to thank them from the bottom of my heart."
George and Kathy have learned that PPL will be providing them with an energy efficient refrigerator, dishwasher, and washer which should help with their electric bills. They're still in need of a range and have some other repair projects around the house.
Anyone who'd like to help George and Kathy should call the United Way of the Capital Region at (717) 724-4078.
