York, Pa. - Police investigating a shooting that killed a nine-year-old girl in York over the weekend believe the incident was gang-related, District Attorney Stanley Rebert said Monday.
Investigators have been working around the clock since the shooting that killed Ciara Savage in the 500 block of Duke Street Sunday afternoon.
"They're pulling out all of the stops on this one," said Lt. Tim Utley, a spokesman for York City police. "It doesn't get much more high priority than this when a nine-year-old bystander becomes a victim of a shooting."
Police said Savage was from Lancaster and had been visiting her aunt. She was playing on the sidewalk with a group of other children when the shots rang out from a passing car, according to police. Some adults were with the children, police said.
Police said the group on the sidewalk began to run, including Savage, but she suffered a single gunshot wound to the back. A relative drove her to York Hospital, where she died from her wounds a short time later, Utley said.
Police found the vehicle that was used in the shooting and have processed it for evidence. Utley said city detectives are actively following leads, but have made no arrests.
