Harrisburg, Pa. - Harrisburg City Council President Linda Thompson pulled off a stunning upset in Tuesday's Democratic primary by defeating current mayor Stephen Reed by more than 1,000 votes, but Reed's loss does not necessarily mean he will be absent from the ballot in November.
Reed could possibly win on the Republican ticket as a write-in candidate.
Nevin Mindlin was unopposed as a GOP candidate and received 422 votes, but 435 votes went to write-in candidates. If enough of the write-ins votes are for Reed, he would face off against Linda Thompson again in the fall.
In his past five terms, Reed has won on both tickets.
Reed could also run as an Independent candidate. There is already a Web page urging Reed to run as an Independent on the social networking Web site Facebook.
Reed says he is focused on being mayor right now, and added he has a lot of work to do before his current term ends at the end of the year.
