Elizabethtown, Pa. - Elizabethtown Councilman Chuck Mummert beat newcomer Don Keller in the Republican mayoral primary Tuesday night. Voters decided in favor of Mummert with 460 votes to Keller's 121.
With just a few weeks of campaigning left, some residents had questioned Keller's primary ballot petition signatures. However, the deadline had passed for appeal. Keller told abc27 that he felt some Etown leaders simply did not like the idea that he was running for mayor.
Lancaster County Board of Elections staff verified the names on Keller's petition for abc27. It required the signatures of ten registered borough Republicans. The petition could include up to five extras. Keller's petition included two Democrats, two non-registered citizens, two names which could not be accounted for, one non-borough resident and eight valid borough Republicans.
Mummert told abc27 Wednesday that he and his campaign were proud of what they accomplished. He said he was disappointed with Keller's campaign.
"I felt that some of his support was not on top of the table," said Mummert. "Some of his support was a little underhanded and we were disappointed with that."
Mummert said the negative part of the campaign might have actually helped him.
"We were given the endorsement of the local party," he said. "We were surrounded by volunteers which was so gratifying. It really became a rallying point in the community."
Mummert told abc27 that he wants to move forward now. As mayor, his responsibility would be to deal closely with the Elizabethtown Police Department. Mummert also said he wants to restore vibrancy to downtown.
Currently, there are no opponents for the fall election. Don Keller did not return multiple phone calls Wednesday.
