New Bloomfield, Pa. - The Bornman family of New Bloomfield, Perry County has owned 60 wooded acres for a long, long time. And, like a lot of her neighbors, Tammy Bornman has a frisky dog who likes to fetch balls and occasionally chase a few fox and deer.
But on Mother's Day, the seven-year-old boxer named Izzie was more hunted than hunter - and barely survived the encounter.
"They said the back wound was actually a puncture wound and the front, there's about 35 staples in front and about five staples in the back wound," Bornman said.
Bornman says she was on the front porch while Izzie, who was running in the front yard, happened to nose over by the tree line. The dog didn't yelp, but certainly came back with some gruesome wounds.
Bornman is sure Izzie was attacked by a bear. She said the Game Commission caught one last year.
"They set up a trap and trapped one that was approximately 400 pounds," she said.
Jerry Feaser, a commission spokesman, says bears are on the move, hungry and not to be messed with.
"The bear will more than likely run, but if they get to a point where they're gonna tangle, the dog's gonna lose," Feaser said.
Izzie lost some skin - and some enthusiasm for the outdoors - since the attack. Bornman is also tentative.
"I didn't used to be scared, but in last two or three years, as we're seeing more evidence of them, I'm definitely more cautious when I hear something snap in the woods," she said. "I'm backing away and going into the house."
