On a hot day, the huge swimming pool at Leader Heights Health and Fitness would have been jammed, but all that greeted members and lifeguards on Tuesday was padlocks.
"I don't have a summer job and neither does my sister," said Margaret Bentley of Dallastown. "She was a lifeguard here as well. So it's kind of bad timing."
Sandy Sprigle of Loganville said she needed the pool at the club to rehab her bad neck. She said the worst part of the fitness complex closing is the kids summer camp will be no more.
"That was one of the wonderful things I saw happening," Sprigle said. "The camp for kids and how well behaved the kids were and how much exercise they were getting."
Kids at the nearby elementary school scramble around the baseball diamond during recess now. Some of their parents are scrambling to find another summer camp since Leader is closed.
Area camps are already booked up, but the summer camp at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in nearby Dallastown may have room for some of them.
"After we do an evaluation we may be able to take a few," said Pastor Roger Mentzer. "We're also scrambling to discover whether or not there are other counselors that don't have work yet this summer."
That's a job lead that displaced lifeguards from Leader Health and Fitness may pursue. "We watched the kids a lot and yeah, it's been upsetting," said out-of-work lifeguard Margaret Bentley.
The Leader Health and Fitness property is being bought by Wellspan Health, owners of York Hospital. There's no word on its plans for the site.
