Kathy Taylor hasn't acted since high school, but that didn't stop the 62-year-old Mechanicsburg woman from trying to land a spot on the silver screen.
Taylor was one of 268 people that auditioned Wednesday for a part as an extra in the new movie "Another Harvest Moon."
"I thought, why not," Taylor said. "They asked for older people. That's me!"
The movie will be set in a nursing home. It stars Ernest Borgnine as an elderly man who suffers several strokes and contemplates suicide. Filming will begin this weekend on the grounds of the former Harrisburg State Hospital.
Martha Hershour of Etters will start college next fall. She knew producers were looking for elderly performers, but decided to take her chances. "The nursing home needs nurses and maybe some grandkids to visit," she said.
Susan Stare brought her two kids, and their Nana, to the auditions. "I just thought it would be something fun to do in the summer and something different, and they would learn what it's like to be in a movie," she said.
John Callahan of Hershey was cast in the movie "Girl, Interrupted," which was also filmed at the State Hospital. He decided to try his luck again because he didn't make the final cut in his first film. "I think the term is, I wound up on the cutting room floor," he said.
The movie is produced by Aurora Films in Lancaster. Producer Chad Taylor, who is best known as a member of the rock band Live, says Harrisburg will play a feature role in the film.
"In the film we're not going to hide the fact that we're in Harrisburg," Taylor said. "That's where these people live in the nursing home. We're Pennsylvania proud."
Producers couldn't say what characteristics "extras" would need to stand out. "We're just looking for people that will work in the story, that won't really stand out and take away from the story, but just sort of make a realistic background," said producer Brad Kenyon.
Taylor says she won't mind if she doesn't make the cut. "This is for fun," she said.
