The co-owner of an eastern Pennsylvania coal mine and two employees will stand trial in connection with two methane gas explosions that seriously injured two miners in 2004 and killed another in 2006.
R&D Coal Co. co-owner and operator David Zimmerman and his son and foreman, Steven Zimmerman, both of Pine Grove, and miner Jeffrey Klinger, of Tremont, were charged in April 2008 with involuntary manslaughter and other offenses following a state grand jury investigation.
The panel found that David and Steven Zimmerman were responsible for dangerous conditions in the mine, and that Klinger did not follow proper safety procedures.
After a preliminary hearing Thursday, District Judge Carol Pankake ordered the Zimmermans and Klinger to stand trial in Schuylkill County Court.
