High gas prices have forced many of us to change our driving habits, including police officers who are not immune to pain at the pump.
About 20 officers from across the midstate are taking part in an intense bicycle training course at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC).
They've been at it all week, and today is their final exam.
Instructors have been teaching them about balance, control and stamina. Organizers say these classes are really filling up thanks to the high price of gas.
They also say bikes are a great way to interact with the community they serve.
However, it is a lot harder than it looks.
"The police officer that drives around in a car with the sunglasses on and the windows up and the air conditioning on, that officer may not be as approachable as the officer on a bike," said Officer Chris Porter. "We find that young children and elderly people alike, they approach the bike in alarming numbers."
Steelton Police Officer Art Etnoyer said, "A lot of it is endurance and the fundamentals. It's skills. If you don't have them, you lose them, kind of like shooting or something like that.
The officers spent eight hours a day riding. By the end of today, many will be very sore, and they're looking forward to a relaxing weekend.
