We told you last month how some retailers, including Best Buy, were charging too much in state sales tax on digital TV converter boxes. Now Best Buy is giving back the overcharge.
Best Buy is sending checks to many Pennsylvanians who paid too much in sales tax. A refund check for a two-converter purchase is about $5. Best Buy was charging state sales tax on the full value of the converter box, instead of the portion not covered by the $40 coupon from the federal government.
"Earlier this year there was some confusion among retailers," said Stephanie Weyant, State Revenue Department spokesperson. "Confusion about whether or not the digital converter box coupons were a debit card or a gift card, because they appeared like a debit card."
We wanted to know from Best Buy how many Pennsylvanians paid too much sales tax, but Best Buy did not return our calls.
Digital TV converter boxes will be needed next February by people who use a roof top antenna or rabbit ears and have an old-style analog TV set.
