A longtime institution at the Lancaster Central Market is closing.
Hodecker's Celery owner Merv Shenk says he buys California-grown celery when the local celery isn't in season, but the cost has tripled in the last few months.
He's closing his Central Market stand on Saturday, but will continue to sell from his home farm in Manheim and a stand at Roots Market outside East Petersburg.
Market Manager Michael Irwin says he hopes to recruit another local celery grower to take the space. He says there are a dozen people on a waiting list for market stand space, but none is a celery grower.
