East Lampeter Township, Pa. - Two Lancaster County children were thrown from a horse-drawn carriage after it broke free from their father's control.
Benuel Stoltzfus was hitching the carriage at his farm in Ronks on Monday when, according to police, the horse got startled and broke free from his control. The horse fled from the farm with his three children - ages 3, 5, and 7 - inside the carriage.
The right wheel of the carriage struck a curb near 2501 Lincoln Highway East, causing the two youngest children to be thrown from the carriage.
The horse then broke free from the reigns and continued running westbound on Lincoln Highway East. The horse was captured a short time later.
The children were taken to Lancaster General Hospital for evaluation. Police say they were not seriously injured.
A witness, Roger Willard, was also taken to the hospital after one of the carriage wheels ran over his foot. Willard had tried to grab the reigns of the horse as it ran with the carriage.
