Swatara Township, Pa. - Another puppy that was abandoned in northern Dauphin County has died. The puppy was one of five found by trash collectors in Lykens, Dauphin County on Tuesday.
One of the puppies was dead when the litter was discovered in a trash can. One died in the Humane Society's care. The third died overnight Wednesday into Thursday.
So what options are available to those who have or find unwanted animals? It is complicated, according to the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area.
In Pennsylvania, if a baby is born and not wanted, mothers may drop the newborn at a hospital without penalty. The same does not go for puppies and kittens.
"The reality is, there's only so many runs," said Humane Society Director Amy Kaunas. "There's only so much space."
Despite state law that prohibits dumping or "abandonment" of animals, people still do it at the Humane Society. Kaunas said that to allow abandonment would mean immense overcrowding and more euthanization. The Humane Society will help pet owners with things like milk, food and spay and neutering. Ultimately, it encourages personal action.
"Perhaps they have a neighbor or a friend that would be a responsible pet owner they could give the puppies to," said Kaunus.
If the Humane Society has space, as a last resort, they will take pets. There is a fee of $115 to $250.
If the animals are strays, you may drop them off if your locality contracts with the Humane Society for stray services. If that is not the case, you are asked to talk with staff at your municipal office, as it is their responsibility to handle stray animals.
