The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported on Thursday that a baby raccoon kept as a pet at a home on Wertzville Road in Enola tested positive for rabies on June 18.

Harrisburg, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported on Thursday that a baby raccoon kept as a pet at a home on Wertzville Road in Enola tested positive for rabies on June 18.
An unknown number of people in the neighborhood may have had contact with the animal since it arrived in early June. The family had also taken the raccoon to other unknown locations.
Health officials advice anyone who may have come into contact with the animal to call the Cumberland County State Health Center at 717-243-5151 or the Pennsylvania Department of Health at 1-877-PA-HEALTH.
Individuals who own pets that may have come in contact with the animal should contact their veterinarian for advice on how to protect the pet and family members.
Touching or handling a potentially rabid animal does not constitute exposure to the disease unless you have been bitten or scratched. Under these circumstances, you should seek medical attention immediately.
People should not keep wild animals as pets.
