Lemoyne, Pa. - Drivers have been complaining about a rough ride, and now, a heavily traveled exit ramp in Cumberland County is closed for repairs. The ramp from Interstate 83 North to Route 581 West will be closed all weekend for road construction.
Luckily, most drivers won't have to deal with the detour to and from work, but some do, and it could affect their business.
The Route 581 exit ramp needs repairs. It's in poor condition, according to PennDOT.
"A lot of people have been complaining over the last several years about the condition of the ramp," said PennDOT spokesperson Greg Penny. "It's been rough for them driving over it."
Friday evening, workers closed the ramp. Throughout the weekend, they're going to pour new concrete and resurface the road.
It's good news for drivers. on average, more than 40,000 vehicles pass through there daily.
"We didn't want to interfere with heavy commuting traffic during the week," Penny said. "That would have been very disruptive, so doing it one the weekend is the best thing for everybody."
It may not be the best thing for Apolo Alaniz. He's a delivery driver for Ciao's Pizzeria in Camp Hill, just south of the 581 ramp. This weekend, he'll be forced to find another way to some West Shore customers.
PennDOT's detour directs drivers to exit I-83 at 13th Street, then take I-83 South to 581. It's about a six mile trip.
"I guess now we're going to give more time to people. Instead of saying 15-20 minutes, I guess we're going to say 30-40 minutes," said Alaniz.
At least it's only temporary, but will customers be so understanding?
"I'm pretty sure I'm going to hear something going on, some complaints about it," Alaniz said.
The ramp is expected to reopen early Monday morning before most folks hit the road for work.
In case you were wondering, this is not an economic stimulus project. We're told the road work was scheduled some time ago.
