Harrisburg, Pa. - The Dauphin County District Attorney's office has identified the Harrisburg police officer involved in a shooting last week as Officer Marc Moule.
Moule is a three-year veteran of the force. This is the second time he has been involved in a police shooting.
Last Thursday morning, police were called to the 500 block of Woodbine Street for a report of several shots fired into a house. They began to chase a car that matched the description of the vehicle given to them at the scene. At one point, the four suspects ditched the car and fled in opposite directions, according to police.
Investigators said Moule encountered a 17-year-old suspect at the intersection of 6th and Division Streets. He shot the teen, who was not armed, in the face.
Prosecutors said Moule told investigators that the suspect was running directly at him and defied repeated commands to stop. He also said he thought the suspect could be armed, given the nature of the earlier incident, according to investigators.
The teen was taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center where he remains in critical but stable condition. Despite reports that the bullet struck the teen's spine, prosecutors said they do not believe he is paralyzed.
An attorney representing the teen's family said he would issue a statement later this week.
District Attorney Ed Marsico said it will take weeks to determine if Moule was justified in shooting the young suspect.
"Obviously the individual that was struck has been hospitalized...we have not been able to take a statement from him," Marsico said.
Marsico added investigations of this nature usually take about four to six weeks to complete.
"Be patient," Marsico said. "This is a process."
Marsico did confirm this was the second shooting incident involving Moule. In September, 2007, Moule was off-duty when he intervened in a shooting near his apartment at the corner of Third and Chestnut Streets. Marsico determined Moule was justified in using force in that incident.
