Mechanicsburg, Pa. - The cash registers at retail stores may be quieter this year, but not at Goodwill. Goodwill stores in our area say business is up almost 20-percent compared to one year ago.
"Over the last year, we have seen a dramatic increase in all our stores," said Jennifer Ross of Goodwill
While much of the clothing is used, some is not. Ross showed us boys pants from Sears with the original tag still on them for $3.50 and a women's swim suit with original tags for $4.
Shopper Ann Malinak of Mechanicsburg said anyone looking to save some money has to stop at stores like Goodwill.
"I found a little dress I plan to wear to my 35th high school reunion," said Malinak. "This is wonderful. The dress is going to be $4.00."
But while more people are shopping at stores like Goodwill, the slower economy means fewer people are making donations.
"Some of the areas are not doing so well," said Ross. "The other areas that are doing well, with a nice consistent, steady donation pattern, those areas are feeding the stores in areas that are not doing too well."
Goodwill is non-profit. The proceeds fund a variety of programs for people with disabilities.
