You can't miss the Star Barn along the busy stretch of Route 283 in Lower Swatara Township.
"The barn represents our rural heritage and our agricultural industry," said Bob Barr, president of the non-profit organization Agrarian Country.
Agrarian Country bought the 136-year-old Star Barn from Preservation Pennsylvania in December 2007.
Now the barn and its outlying buildings are about to be dismantled piece by piece, painstakingly tagged, and moved to a new location - a sprawling 300-plus acre site along Interstate 81 in East Hanover Township, Lebanon County, near the Hollywood Casino.
Bob Kinsley II, the president of Preservation Pennsylvania, is more than happy with the plans.
"For this building to have a new life that will be so visible, and so open, and such a great productive use, is the real success," he said.
The Star Barn will be the centerpiece of the new Agrarian Country agricultural education complex. Early plans include a botanical garden, museum, a 100-year-old chapel from Juniata County, and a park for community events.
The massive barn dismantling project rests in the hands of one man - the barn saver.
John High, the owner of The Barn Saver, has restored dozens of barns - just not one quite this famous.
"I've done bigger buildings, but nothing on this scale, because everybody loves it. And it's a lot taller building than most of the ones I've done," High said.
But before High and his crew can start work, Barr and his team must get some approvals. And let's not forget about the money - Barr is about to embark on a $10 million fundraising effort.
"This is not a privately-funded project, it's a non-profit organization," said Barr. "And because of that, if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen because the people of the community and throughout Pennsylvania want it to happen and will pay for it and devote their time to it."
Barr is hopeful the Star Barn could start being dismantled in January, with a barn raising party at the new site some seven months later. And that will be quite a sight - crews will be using 1872 construction techniques, complete with oxen, mules, and horses.
