Police in York County are looking for a man who tried to lure two teenage girls into his car in Shrewsbury by offering them free beer.
It happened Wednesday night around 8:00 at the Market Square Shopping Center on South Main Street.
Southern Regional Police Chief James Childs said the girls, who were 14 and 15 years old, were walking to the Rutters Farm Store when the man approached them. The suspect - who has been described as a male, 5 feet 10 inches and in his mid-30s - asked them if they would like to go to a pool party and have some free beer. Childs said when he realized the girls were minors he drove away.
"You can't take chances nowadays because you don't know what's going through people's minds," Childs said.
Just last weekend, a man tried to lure a young person into his car in the 200 block of North Sherman Street in York. A case of child luring was also recently reported in Spring Grove.
Childs said the cases are becoming more common throughout the county. He said parents should speak to their children about what to do if they're approached. Childs said victims should make a quick note of something unique about the suspect, such as tattoos or piercings. They should also look for something unique on the car, like a bumper sticker or something hanging in the rear view mirror.
Childs said victims should get to a safe place and call police right away. Victims should not wait until they get home or until they talk to their parents. Childs said one of the biggest challenges they face in finding luring suspects is the amount of time that passes between when an incident happens and when it's reported.
