As police and the Lancaster County District Attorney's investigators did their work on West Main Street in Reinholds, people who knew 45-year-old Jan Roseboro wondered who would want to hurt her.
"Just about everybody knew her," said her next-door neighbor Richard Pope. "She would get my vote for mother of the year. She was always outside playing with her kids. I just can't believe this - it's terrible."
Police say Roseboro's husband called 911 after he told them he found her unconscious in the family swimming pool Tuesday night. An autopsy revealed her cause of death was a severe beating.
Pope, who lives next door, says he heard nothing unusual on Tuesday night.
"They usually have some people over, and they did that night," he said. "It gets loud sometimes, but other than that on Tuesday night, there was nothing really out of the normal."
The victim's husband, Michael Roseboro, operates the Roseboro Funeral Home in nearby Denver, Lancaster County. Jan Roseboro was very active in helping out the East Cocalico swim team at Reamstown Community Pool. Her friends can't believe she's gone.
"I just remember all she did for our swim team," said Mark Maurizi of Reamstown. "She helped with the team for many years. She always just wanted to make everything here as good as possible as it could be for the kids."
People in the swim community heard on Wednesday that Roseboro had died, but they thought she drowned in the family pool. Then they heard the coroner's report about the severe beating.
"Then I heard this morning about the autopsy and how she was beaten," said Maurizi. "My jaw hit the floor. I couldn't believe it. I have no idea who would want to hurt her."
