Grand View Cemetery in North Annville Township covers about 100 acres of land and appears to be well-maintained. But some veterans' families say something significant is being overlooked.
"A lot of the families are coming in - surviving spouses of the war veterans. The markers are either broken or completely missing," said Robert Kale, the Director for Veteran Affairs in Lebanon County.
Robert Kale has worked at Lebanon County Veteran Affairs for just about ten years. He says the spouses and family members of local veterans buried at Grand View Cemetery have complained about the cemetery for just as long. They come to him with broken flag holders, asking for help.
"They're extremely upset about the condition of the markers that are placed out there," he said. "The ones that are bent or broken and also the ones that are missing. They feel that their husband should have a war marker there, and also the flag to represent their service to their country."
Kale's father, a veteran of the Korean War, is buried at Grandview. Just a few days ago, Kale says he went to visit his father's grave and noticed the marker was missing.
Officials say the county spends anywhere between $300 and $500 dollars a year replacing these markers.
A spokesperson for the cemetery said he doesn't believe it's an act of carelessness on the part of cemetery workers.
"The problem usually arises, as I understand it, when families come out to the cemetery and move them away from the monument and we come through with our heavy equipment, moving or whatever. They're not always visible, or we can't move around them," said Frank Milles, a spokesman for the cemetery.
Milles says there are a number of veterans buried at the cemetery and that his staff does take great care in maintaining the grounds.
"If we have any workers that we know of who are purposely damaging things, or not taking due care in how they maintain the cemetery grounds, they don't work for us very long," says Milles.
A cemetery spokesman says the cemetery will replace any broken markers, and that spouses and family members should contact them directly for a replacement.
