New Holland, Pa. - A veteran's monument in Lancaster County was vandalized over the July 4 holiday weekend.
New Holland police say the words "6 years, 4323 lives, Happy 4th" were stenciled in red spray paint on a wall bearing the names of war veterans and on a bench at the memorial in New Holland Park. The words were likely in reference to the casualty count of the war in Iraq
(web | news) .
"That monument has nothing to do with your position with the war," said Detective Jonathan Heisse. "It has to do with honoring people who have made the ultimate sacrifice."
Borough workers removed most of the paint.
"I think it upset all of us, for good reason," said Borough Manager Richard Fulcher. "It's there to remember people who have sacrificed for their country."
At the nearby American Legion, veterans said the vandal was entitled to his or her opinion, but shouldn't have damaged the monument to make a point.
"To me it's not making a statement at all...it's just causing damage," said Vietnam veteran William Park. "It's the same as if they're going into a cemetery and toppling tombstones that belong to families they don't even know."
Anyone with information is asked to contact New Holland police at (717) 354-4647.
