Lebanon, Pa. - With a little more rain and higher temperatures, farmers say this year's sweet corn crop could be one of the biggest they've seen in years.
Dennis Grumbine, a longtime farmer, grows sweet corn at his Myerstown farm. He says the county and most of southeastern Pennsylvania will reap the benefits of a wet start to summer.
"We've had an ideal growing year. And the sweet corn that we've had so far, and I think what people have bought, yeah you're going to notice a difference because so far it's been an ideal growing year," said Grumbine.
Some are saying sweet corn is better this season. Farmers say that's's because crops have been able to absorb more nutrients because of the rain. Annville resident Pat Krall says she agrees something seems to be different this year.
"I know the Florida corn has been exceptionally good this year. So, I'm assuming that the corn around here is, and that's probably because we've had sufficient rainfall," said Krall.
At Dennis Frey's market in Lebanon, there is a steady flow of sweet corn buyers and says customers keep coming back for more and with a smile.
"You know everybody has their own opinion, but we've had a number of comments that it's been running good and some say better than others," said Frey.
If there is a higher than usual production of corn this year, farmers say the economic boost would be felt throughout the county.
The rain has caused some issues with field corn because farmers say the rain has saturated the soil a little too much in certain spots.
