York, Pa. - A fire Wednesday afternoon destroyed an entire block of row homes in York.
The fire, which began shortly before 3 p.m., swept through 16 homes in the 700 block of Chestnut Street. The York-Adams Chapter of the American Red Cross estimates that anywhere from 60 to 150 people may have been displaced by the fire.
More than a dozen city fire engines were dispatched to the six-alarm blaze. Several firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling the flames. No residents were injured.
Several pets were removed from the homes, although many perished in the fire.
The Red Cross set up a comfort station for affected families at the Alexander Goode Elementary School at 251 North Broad Street. Families in need of Red Cross assistance were asked to report to the school.
The call came in as city firefighters were battling a fire at Consolidated Scrap Resources, in the 600 block of East Princess Street. Officials said that fire started in a pile of scrap shortly after 2 p.m.
