Harrisburg, Pa. (AP) - Pregnant women in need of an obstetrician and parents of mentally retarded children may be among those feeling the pinch of cutbacks in Pennsylvania state government's deficit-ridden budget.
With Gov. Ed Rendell and legislators trying to decide how to fill a multibillion deficit, many state programs will get cut.
That may mean more mentally retarded adults must continue living with parents unable to care for them if there is no money to whittle down a waiting list for community homes.
It also means the state may stop providing tens of millions of dollars that help hospitals afford to treat the poor and uninsured.
If that happens, for example, Charles Cole Memorial Hospital in northcentral Pennsylvania will close its obstetrical unit, the only one around for 35 or so miles.
