Derry Township, Pa. - Mike Cvetko has lived in his Derry Township home for 14 years, but his time in what he describes as a "paradise on earth" may be cut short. He's been asked to leave his home by the owner of the land.
Cvetko's house - as well as a number of others - are on property known as the Stoverdale Camp Meeting Grounds. It dates back to the 1860s. These days, right next door, is brand new development.
The way Cvetko sees it, he's sitting on some valuable real estate.
"We're like this wall," he said. "We're in the way here. They want it so bad they're desperate."
Bradley Miller is a spokesman for the Stover family, which owns the property. He says the homes are old and in disrepair and should come down. He adds there are currently no deals on the table to buy the property and no potential buyers have come and made any offers for it.
Cvetko and some of his neighbors are fighting the eviction in court. Their case is based, in part, on what's written in the will of Edward Stover Sr., the original owner of the land. The will directs his family give the first right of purchase to the person or persons occupying each particular tract of land.
"They believe that because of a will and the promises made in a will that they should have a right to purchase their lots," said Bob Mirin, an attorney for the home owners. "If the estate wants to go in a different direction, the estate should purchase their right from them."
The Stover estate reportedly paid some home owners an undisclosed sum and they moved, but about eight home owners remain.
"We ain't going anywhere," Cvetko said. "We ain't going anywhere till we get just compensation."
