Sunday is the holiest day of the week for many in the midstate's religious community. In York County, however, the House of God has become a target for criminals. Five churches were burglarized, all on or near Route 74.

We're told the burglars were looking for money. They broke into five different churches this weekend and in one case, made off with cash. The good news is they didn't trash the churches and left other valuables alone.

Pastor Doug McClean wasn't expecting to find a mess in the church office Sunday morning. "It was a real surprise to see something like this," he said.

Overnight Saturday, thieves broke a window at the Calvary Chapel Church in Delta. Once inside, they took money from a safe and a collection box. They made off with about $500 in cash.

"There are some addictive sins that control people's lives and they become so desperate to get their needs met they go to extreme measures," McClean said.

About ten miles up the road, at New Harmony Presbyterian Church, someone broke into the church office and sanctuary overnight Friday.

"They were looking for cash. The crow bar was placed here," said Rev. Robert Edmundson.

Church leaders will only have to replace the doors. The burglars didn't take anything.

"This is happening in this day and age that people do not really respect the church any more than any other institution," Edmundson said.

Same story at Bethany Baptist Church in nearby Airville. There were broken windows and doors; nothing missing.

Since Friday night, at least five churches were targeted. They're all located on or near Delta Road in southeastern York County.

"At least nobody was hurt. That's the big thing," Edmundson said.

Calvary Chapel seemed to be the hardest hit, though its members are ready to move on.

"We're willing to forgive them. The lord is willing to forgive them and he has a much better plan for their life," Edmundson said.

Police may not be quite as forgiving. State troopers are now investigating. They say it's too early to know for sure, but tell us there's a good possibility the incidents are related.
